Reverse Osmosis(RO) is a purification technology that uses a semi-permeable membrane.
RO can remove many types of molecules and ions from solutions and is used in industrial water treatment to produce potable water. The process is similar to other membrane technology applications. However, there are key differences between reverse osmosis and filtration. The predominant removal mechanism in membrane filtration is straining, or size exclusion, so the process can theoretically achieve perfect exclusion of particles regardless of operational parameters such as influent pressure and concentration. Moreover, reverse osmosis involves a diffusive mechanism so that separation efficiency is dependent on solute concentration, pressure, and water flux rate.
What R.O removes
Reverse osmosis is an effective way of eliminating water impurities such as Toxic Heavy Metals such as Lead and Radium, Chlorinated Pesticides, Turbidity, Dissolved Solids.
Where R.O is used
Reverse osmosis is commonly used in drinking water purification from seawater, removing salt, waste water purification, dialysis and widely used within the food industry.
The membranes used for reverse osmosis have a dense layer in the polymer matrix where the separation occurs. In most cases, the membrane is designed to allow only water to pass through this dense layer, while preventing the passage of solutes (such as salt ions). This process requires a high pressure be exerted on the high concentration side of the membrane, usually 2–17 bar (30–250 psi) for fresh and brackish water, and 40–82 bar (600–1200 psi) for seawater, which has around 27 bar 390 psi) natural osmotic pressure that must be overcome.
Custom Built R.O's
A rapidly increasing side to our work has been the manufacture of custom-built commercial Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) Systems. These are used wherever the highest quality water is required i.e. hospital sterilisation equipment, in industry for fine limit water cutting as well as the electronic and even the catering industry.
We can supply all sizes of equipment, including storage tanks, transfer pumps with full installation and regular service. As this is always a specialist project, we prefer to visit the site and carry out a full no-obligation survey to ensure that we interpret your needs correctly.
Full installation and maintenance services on new or existing equipment is available. This is especially important with R.O. systems to guarantee the water quality with regular filter changeovers and maintenance.
